Guidebooks & Manuals

Technical Report Guidelines Manual: Conceived and implemented a program to improve the content and readability of technical reports produced by a division of the Electric Power Research Institute.

Communications Guidebook: Directed writing and production of a guidebook for use by R&D staff of the Pacific Gas & Electric Company in assessing communications needs, identifying target audiences and key messages, and selecting and producing the most appropriate communications products.

Proposal Writing Manual: Wrote, designed, and produced a manual for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District outlining procedures and formats to be used in responding to RFPs; conducted a workshop to present and explain these materials to 200-plus technical managers; and structured and wrote individual proposals.

Particulate Collection Guidelines: Researched and wrote a series of guideline documents summarizing a multiyear research effort to characterize and assess operation of “baghouses” used to collect particulate matter produced in the combustion of pulverized coal in electric utility boilers.

NOx Emissions Control Manual: Researched and wrote a 200-page assessment of commercially available NOx emissions controls for retrofit on coal-fired electric utility boilers to meet provisions of federal Clean Air Act Amendments.

Directory of Public Goods Programs: Compiled a directory summarizing programs conducted by public utilities, state agencies, and others in California to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, energy RD&D, and services to low-income customers.

Marketing & Communications Plans and Programs

California Board for Energy Efficiency Served as the primary communications contractor in the formation and establishment of this state agency charged with responsibility for defining and managing California’s energy efficiency programs under the state’s public benefits legislation, AB 1890.

Harbor Bay Isle Associates Structured and edited a business plan presented to the board of directors of the General Electric Company.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company Worked as the primary communications contractor for the R&D Department for over a decade. Designed and managed communications plans and wrote and produced the department’s core communications products including annual reports, technical reports, results flyers, profile documents, technical journal articles, and a quarterly newsletter.

Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Conceived and managed communications programs ranging to over $1 million a year for half a dozen departments within the Institute for 20 years. Designed and managed communications plans; edited and processed technical reports to improve their quality and ensure timely production; wrote and produced speeches, technical papers, and audiovisuals.

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation Designed and managed media and public affairs programs for the corporation and its Refractories, Industrial Chemicals, R&D, and Energy Efficiency divisions for five years.

Kaiser Refractories Served as the primary communications contractor on this Division’s spin-off as an ESOP from Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. Defined new corporate identity and trademark materials, and coordinated internal and media communications activities to establish the new identity in the marketplace.

Sacramento Municipal Utility District Planned and managed a variety of communications projects for SMUD’s Energy Efficiency Department including design and presentation of a workshop on procedures for responding to requests for proposals.
