Technical Report Guidelines
Conceived and implemented a program to improve the content and readability of technical reports produced by a department of the Electric Power Research Institute. Summarized and tailored the information in these reports for key internal and utility audiences, and prepared technical journal articles and other communications products to disseminate the information more broadly. This effort reduced staff and contractor time commitments in preparing reports; moved reports more smoothly and in a more timely manner through the department to target audiences; and gained greater exposure and recognition for the department’s work within the Institute, the utility industry, and the scientific community generally.

Communications Guidebook
Directed writing and production of a guidebook for use by R&D staff of the Pacific Gas & Electric Company in assessing communications needs, identifying target audiences and key messages, and selecting and producing the most appropriate communications products. Adherence to this guidebook increased the department’s communications output; saved staff time; and proved useful as a tool in orienting new and existing staff to the range of communications resources available to them.

Proposal Writing Manual
Wrote, designed, and produced a manual for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District outlining procedures and formats to be used in responding to RFPs; conducted a workshop to present and explain these materials to 200-plus technical managers; and structured and wrote individual proposals. Following these procedures staff gained hundreds of thousands of dollars in business opportunities for the utility.

Particulate Collection Series
Researched and wrote a series of technical reports and technical journal articles summarizing a multiyear research effort to characterize and assess operation of “baghouses” used to collect particulate matter produced in the combustion of pulverized coal in electric utility boilers.

NOx Emissions Control Manual
Researched and wrote a 200-page assessment of commercially available NOx emissions controls for retrofit on coal-fired electric utility boilers to meet provisions of federal Clean Air Act Amendments.

Directory of Public Goods Programs
Compiled a directory summarizing programs conducted by public utilities, state agencies, and others in California to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, energy RD&D, and services to low-income customers.
